ABOUT SEAN RENFROE

BIOGRAPHY

I’m Sean Renfroe, a Shenandoah Valley based Wet Plate collodion and Large Format Photographer.

In a trip to Austin, Texas in 2016, I discovered a passion for film photography shooting Polaroids on an SX-70. What began as curiosity quickly evolved into something deeper, the tangible nature of film, paired with the uniqueness of every exposure, reshaped the way I saw and preserved the world around me.

As my work developed, I was drawn further into historic processes, ultimately finding a home in the wet plate collodion technique. Each image is handcrafted from start to finish: poured, sensitized, exposed, and developed by hand, resulting in one-of-a-kind photographs that exist as physical objects, not just images. In an era increasingly defined by speed and automation, this process stands in deliberate contrast: slow, intentional, and rooted in craft.

I am continually pushing myself to better understand not only photographic technique, but the chemistry that makes each plate possible. The balance of light, timing, and chemical reaction demands both precision and experimentation, and that pursuit of mastery is central to my work.

My approach is grounded in the belief that meaningful images should be felt as much as they are seen. I am dedicated to creating tangible, enduring photographs and pieces that carry weight, presence, and a sense of permanence in a fleeting world.
